Towards a more sustainable future
Turning carbon footprints into environmental handshakes
Sustainability from farm to fork
With Arla® Pro as your partner, you can rest assured that the dairy that goes into your cooking is sourced responsibly. Sustainability is at the heart of what we do and everyday we work hard to come up with new ways of reducing our footprint from farm to fork.
Sustainable packaging
Working closely with our customers, we develop dairy packaging that is renewable, reusable and designed to minimize food waste. One of the latest innovations is our green milk carton made from plantbased materials that reduce CO2e emissions by 31 % compared with traditional cartons. Another great example is the new yoghurt bins that can be reused to store foodstuff when empty. Our goal is that all our product packaging is 100% renewable by 2025.
Sustainable transportation
Milk from our farms and dairies are transported by trucks. To reduce emissions, we optimize every route and train our drivers to drive economically. Before setting out, the wheels of the trucks are checked for tire pressure and max load to reduce the use of fuel. In Denmark, some of our trucks are even fuelled by biogas, emitting less than half the CO2e of regular trucks. This is an initative that we will keep on expanding going forward.
Sustainable production
It takes energy to produce dairy, but it’s our responsibility to do it in the most efficient manner. One of our main focus areas is powering production with renewable energy sources like wind or solar power. The goal is that half the energy consumption of our dairies is covered by renewable energy. We’ve also partnered up with researchers to come up with efficient ways of repurposing the biproducts of our production for animal feed or biogas.
Sustainable partnerships
Creating sustainable solutions in close collaboration with you and our other customers is key to making a real impact. Solutions that make work in the professional kitchen simpler, while allowing you to put even more sustainable options on the menu. We’re in constant dialogue with our customers to avoid overproduction and we’re dedicated to sharing our knowledge on how to minimize food waste.

Arla is owned by the very farmers that supply the milk and all 9,900 of them play a part in reducing our carbon footprint. From 1990-2015, our farms have reduced CO2e emissions by 24% thanks to, among other things, data-driven climate checks and new technology. Today, a large share of our farms are powered entirely or in part by renewable energy sources. And we support research into new types of feed that can reduce the CO2e-emission of cows.
